This aim of this thesis is to explore the transformation of fairy tales in modern literature. Fairy tales carry a rich history dating back centuries and have undergone significant changes as they have been adapted and retold across different cultures and time periods. The thesis examines how modern authors have re-imagined and reinvented classic fairy tales by illustrating the ways in which they have altered the traditional themes, characters, and motifs to reflect contemporary social and cultural issues. Through a close reading of the texts by Angela Carter and Nikita Gill and theories by Jacques Derrida and Julia Kristeva, the thesis argues that the modern retelling of fairy tales represents a form of cultural commentary that reflects the changing values and concerns of contemporary society. Ultimately, the thesis demonstrates that fairy tale and folklore retellings are not just another version of old stories, instead, they are a medium of exploring the postmodern complexities and nuances of society and giving new meanings to timeless tales.en_US
