Our bodies are made up of a variety of cell types. One of them is stem cells. Stem cells divide to make daughter cells in the body and in the lab. Daughter cells can self-renew or specialize into cells that fulfill a specific function (differentiation). Other cells in the body do not have the ability to regenerate. Disease, injury, or genetic illnesses may harm or destroy cells, tissues, and organs. Before being reintroduced into the body, stem cells are used to repair damaged or missing cells. New strategies for training embryonic stem cells to become specific cell types have been identified. Developing medicines that inhibit the self-renewal signals to cancer stem cells may be developed. The distinctions between normal and malignant stem cells might lead to novel cancer therapeutic targets.en_US
