Abstract

This thesis project, titled "Re-thinking Meherpur Cultural Development & Entertainment Square", is rooted in the historical, cultural, and social landscape of Meherpur—a district of immense symbolic significance in the formation of Bangladesh. Despite its role as the site of the country’s first provisional capital during the Liberation War of 1971, Meherpur remains largely overlooked in terms of cultural infrastructure and architectural preservation. This thesis aims to revitalize the area by proposing a multifunctional public square that embraces both heritage and modernity. The proposed development integrates a variety of cultural, educational, and recreational programs such as a Shilpakala and Shishu-Shahitto block, bazaar, mosque, training center, museum, and community spaces. Each block has been designed in response to the specific needs of the local population while honoring the area's history and traditions. Notably, the project includes spaces for local artisans—especially potters from Mondol Para—and aims to reconnect the community with the nearby ghat and canal. The proposal is informed by detailed site analysis, historical research, and community engagement strategies. It demonstrates how design can serve as a transformative force, creating inclusive, functional, and symbolic spaces that not only meet current demands but also safeguard cultural memory for future generations.
