Abstract

Khadi is one of the oldest heritage crafts of Bangladesh. The fabric has stood the test of time simply because of its versatility, simplicity and climate-responsive nature. Unfortunately, the existence of this craft has become increasingly endangered by the emergence of cheaper, yet lower quality industrially-produced fabrics. While the new fabric are more popular, Khadi is richer, more context-appropriate and more ecofriendly. This paper endeavors to explore the possible courses of action that can be taken to revive a fading Bangladeshi craft- the craft of Khadi. This paper also tries to explore if design intervention and strategic institutionalization can help in the intricate process of craft revival, development and expansion
