Tharu Cultural and Community Exposition Centre, Itahari

Abstract

The Tharu Cultural and Community Exposition Center is a cultural, educational, and social hub designed to preserve and promote the heritage of the Tharu community in Nepal. Responding to the gradual loss of indigenous traditions due to modernization, the project creates a platform for cultural exhibition, community engagement, education, research, and tourism. Inspired by traditional Tharu settlements, the design emphasizes the connection between culture, agriculture, nature, and community life. Courtyards, open gathering spaces, shaded walkways, and riverfront connections enhance social interaction and environmental comfort, while locally inspired materials and passive design strategies support sustainability. With a total built area of approximately 101,000 sq.ft., the center includes exhibition galleries, cultural halls, seminar and research facilities, craft training spaces, retail areas, guest accommodation, and public gathering zones. Together, these facilities strengthen cultural identity, encourage community participation, support local livelihoods, and promote sustainable tourism.
