Alpana Gram: Revitalising rural identity and economy through community-based tourism

Abstract

Alpana Gram is a village which is known as Tikoil village to the local people of Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi. The unique cultural practice of this village has given a new identity from Tikoil to Alpana Gram. They practice a traditional art known as “Alpana” in the indoor and outdoor facade of their own homesteads which gives a unique experience of a canvas where you can live. This vibrant tradition of them has attracted a great number of both Bangladeshi and international tourists. Since, a huge number of tourists has started visiting the village, it was disrupting the privacy of the villagers and the peaceful environment. Hence, it was necessary to take control over the tourists so that they cannot dominate the villagers with their presence. Hence, the thesis proposes the transformation of this village into a community-based tourism place in such a way which can not only enhance the tourist’s experience but also create a way of economic empowerment of the villagers. The intervention includes sustainable design, experiencing local heritage while preserving the authenticity of the village and promoting local craftsmanship. The aim of this proposal is to create a connection between the tourists and the villagers by benefiting both.
