Abstract

This paper presents an overmuch redevelopment and conservation plan of the Khulna Divisional Public Library, a public library from southwestern Bangladesh that is one of the oldest and most heritage-dense. With the social and historical significance of the library, this project does not simply envision the library as a new public building of modern times with expanded functions; it also sees conservation of the existing old library building as a fundamental aspect of the plan. The proposal responds to further needs that are developing in the community by introducing interactive reading areas, digital literacy zones, and flexible outdoor learning and cultural spaces—all while preserving architectural heritage in the new building. Using the place study, weather conditions, and global examples like the Qatar National Library and the National Library of Bangladesh, the paper sets a plan that mixes old ways with new ideas. In the end, the project shifts the library as a changing public symbol, mixing past and present, welcoming differences, and contributing to the city and cultural fabric of Khulna.
