Abstract

Medicinal plants have always been considered as a valuable source of treatment since the ancient times. This review paper was done focusing on Tinospora cordifolia and its immunomodulatory properties. T. cordifolia is a large climbing shrub having many pharmacological properties and this medicinal plant has a great demand among the folk people of the Indian subcontinent. Different parts of T. cordifolia consist of many pharmacologically active compounds like alkaloids, phenols, glycosides, steroids, terpenoids, tannins, carbohydrates and other unique compounds having immunomodulatory, anti-diabetic, anti inflammatory, hypotensive, scizonticidal, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, antidiarrheal and many other properties. This plant can play a significant role in the modulation of the immune system as several components of this plant can increase the phagocytic activity of macrophage, antibody production, nitric oxide production, production of cytokines, lymphocyte proliferation, chemotactic index, plaque forming cell production and many other immune system modifying activities. The finding of this study is that this plant can increase the efficiency of the immune system.
