A review on phytochemicals as potential therapeutics for diabetes

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is one of the major diseases that is seen in every corner of the world and it became a great challenge worldwide as the number of patients is increasing in a larger number. For managing diabetes, many pharmacotherapy and synthetic medicines has been developed but it is seen that those medicines are less patient compliant and holds limitations. So nowadays researchers are interested in plant derived medications which are known as phytochemicals. In this review article, detailed studies are provided about phytochemicals that are used as therapeutics for diabetes mellitus. This review gives scientific facts of phytochemicals such as- Flavonoids. Alkaloids, Terpenoids, and Phenolic acid which are antidiabetic potential. For using phytochemical derived medicines in mainstream, more research and clinical studies are required. This review aims to compile recent knowledge about phytochemicals used in diabetes management by emphasizing their therapeutic effectiveness, mechanism, challenges and advance treatment approaches.
