dc.description.abstract“It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression, 'As pretty as an airport.” - Douglas Adams. The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul The main goal of this paper intends to show the design philosophy and process behind the expansion plan for Osmani International Airport in Sylhet, fulfilling the need for a growing air traffic and for Sylhet to become a regional international hub. Since Sylhet is the tourism and trading capital of the country for the past few decades, with its historical value and the new decade boasting many expatriates settling down abroad for employment, Sylhet has a lot of international potential on the horizon. This terminal facility will be ultra-modern and time-sensitive yet culturally contextualized. Thus, in addition to the current code of aviation planning expectations, elements of Tea gardens, and Bangla Batton will invoke the terminal building's fabric. The project compiles a literature review, a site analysis, and both local and international case studies to justify spacing requirements, functional segregation versus terminal layout, airside/landside generations. The terminal will service up to 2 million annual passengers by 2040 with a departure level, baggage claim, arrival level, customs and immigration, cargo shipping, loading docks, car parking, and control towers operation. Ultimately, the recommended design creates operational effectiveness and an iconic architectural identity for Sylhet and is treated as a major gateway to the city.en_US
