Abstract

This study aims to evaluate password security practices among the top e-commerce, news portal, and different government websites in Bangladesh along with the ecommerce websites in India. Drawing from the established heuristics as presented in the existing literature, we systematically assess the adherence of 72 websites to the essential security guidelines. We also find the relationship between password security and other external economic factors. The study sheds light on the prevalent inadequacies in password security practices among the prominent websites of different categories in Bangladesh as well as India. The implications of these findings underscore the urgency for solid security measures to fortify the user authentication systems and mitigate the risks posed by the potential cyber threats.
