    Water quality tests and behavioral factors of child diarrhoea in Dhaka slums

    Diarrhoeal disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in less developed countries, especially among children aged 0-5 years. It is a symptom of infection caused by a host of bacterial, viral and parasitic organisms most of which can be spread by contaminated water. Diarrhoea prevalence rate for the children in Dhaka slums is 214.29. The total costs of children's diarrhoea (adding all the direct and indirect) in Dhaka slums is Tk. 133.88 over a 15 day time interval. The water quality is measured at the point-of-use and the point-of-source by the total coliform, faecal coliform, and faecal streptococci tests per 100 ml water. The total coliform, faecal coliform, and faecal streptococci are at the point-of-source 651, 450, and 71 and at the point-of-use 919, 636, and 80 respectively. The test values at the point-of-use are greater than that at the point of- source due to drinking water contaminated by behavioral activities. Due to the almost perfect correlation between the total coliform, faecal coliform, faecal streptococci tests, we need to drop the values from these two tests (total coliform and faecal streptococci) in the econometric analysis. We will use the faecal coliform test, as it is the test most commonly referred to in the existing literature

    Use of MM5 model for weather forecasting over Bangladesh region

    The severity of weather appears almost every year in Bangladesh. It causes damage of property and takes a very high death toll due to absence of timely and proper forecasting facility. Thus the focus of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of weather model for forecasting and estimating convective system. A high resolution mesoscale model MM5 has been used in this regard to observe the accurate rainfall estimation over Bangladesh. The model is run at two nested domains at 45 km and 15 km resolutions for two durations i.e. 31 March to 05 April 2002 and 20 to 25 May 2002. In both the cases, results indicate that the MM5 model has a good capability to estimate rainfall over Bangladesh

    Tribal people and their socio-economic characteristics in Rangamati sadar thana

    Bangladesh is a densely populated country of South East Asia that has a rich tribal presence. There are about 58 tribes living in different parts of the country. Bangladesh has 1.2 million tribal people, which is just above 1 percent of the total population. Whatever the population they differ in their social organizations, marital customs, rites and rituals, food and other customs from the people of the rest of the country. Most of the tribal people speak in Tibeto-Burman tongues. This paper presents a brief description of the socio-economic characteristics of the Tribal people of Rangamati Sadar Thana on the basis of data collected through a field survey. The survey covered a random sample of 200 households. This paper reveals that the tribal people are lagging behind the mainstream population with respect to economical, political, social and technological standings and still going on with outmoded lifestyle and ideology.

    The business graduate employability in Bangladesh: dilemma and expected skills by corporate world

    Unemployment scenario of the graduate level in Bangladesh has been a serious problem. Lately, graduates are more prone to acquire business education, which is more transferable to the job. Despite that, the business graduates are frustrated with the burden of education, as there are concurrent occurrences of joblessness. However, the prevalent dilemma of employability appears, as there are imbalances due to expected skills/qualifications by the ultimate employers. Analysis of this study tries to indicate this phenomenon by focusing of the skills/qualification (apart from degree, certificate, and diploma) that are considered as important for graduates' employability by the corporate bodies of Bangladesh. Continuous persuasion of immaculate academic results by the business graduates have been identified as less important, whereas more emphasis have been imparted on exposure to the corporate culture and analytical competence. Failure to meet those expected skills would aggravate the situations for graduates' employability.

    Sans analysis on CTAB (Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide micellar solution)

    The CTAB (Cetyltrimethyl Bromide) micellar solutions are studied by SANS measurement for different concentrations and at different temperatures with the additives of NaSal. The concentrations are 0.1M, 0.2M and 0.4M in D2O system. The temperatures are 30C, 40C and 60C for the solution 0.1MCTAB+0.03MNaSal. The data are analyzed by Hayter and Penfold type analysis and it gives the information of different parameters such as aggregation numbers, charge, minor and major axes and the inter particle separations at different concentrations and temperatures of the micelles.

    On gamma-ray emission from pulsar magnetosphere

    Pulsars, a class of rotating neutron stars, are one of the most interesting objects of nature. Although most pulsars have been detected in the radio range, a handful of them are active in gamma rays. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the understanding of the gamma-ray emission processes from pulsars. In this work, we review the different models that are being put forth to explain the pulsar emission, the relation between pulsars and the unidentified gamma-ray sources observed by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instrument. We present our recent study of plasma modes in the pulsar magnetosphere and discuss briefly the future of gamma-ray astronomy.

    Measurement of the concentrations of fluorine in the soil of different areas of Savar and its effects on Environment

    To find out the concentration of Fluorine, soil samples were collected from ten different agricultural lands of different places of Savar which were measured by using proton induced gamma rays emission (PIGE) technique. The samples were irradiated by 2.5MeV proton beam from 3MV Van de Graaff accelerator of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC). Characteristic gamma rays emitted from the exited nuclei of fluorine in the samples were detected by using a high purity germanium (HPGe) detector. Concentrations of the element were measured by PIGE gamma yields with that of USGS geological standards, AGV-1 and Soil-7. The present investigation showed that the concentrations of fluorine in a few samples were under optimum range and most of them were outside of the optimum range; i.e., 200ppm-300ppm. The average concentration of fluorine in the soils of Savar was 787.25ppm which was more than twice its optimum concentration of it in soil. This extra fluorine might be the result of unwise waste management of different industries and laboratories which are located in that area. The concentrations in the soils were compared with that of standard and discussed in both biological and environmental contexts.

    Impact of price and other factors on tea in Bangladesh: sources of variation and disparity over division

    Tea is a beverage made by steeping leaving in boiling water. Tea is the most popular and cheapest beverage next to water in the world. It is consumed by a range of age groups in all levels of society. An attempt has been made in this research to analyze the price elasticities of most exportable crops in Bangladesh: sources of variation and disparity over the division. In investigating the impact of price and other factors on the supply of tea, the Cobweb supply model in a modified form has been considered. The supply price elasticities have also been estimated. The Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method has been used to estimate the model. The study is based on time series data over 12 years (BBS: 1985/86-1996/97).

    Glimpse on child labor: a study on child labor situation in Dhaka city corporation area

    The prevalence of child labor has, in recent years, become a serious problem throughout the world and especially in many poor developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Being one of the most densely populated poverty-stricken countries of the world the problem of child labor has become one of the prime concerns for the government and people of Bangladesh. This paper was prepared in the light of the findings of a practical survey project that was conducted out of the desire to know about the situation of the most unfortunate as well as deprived but most important segment of the country’s population. Being the capital of the country the child labor situation of Dhaka would certainly serves as an indicator of the whole country. Hence Dhaka City Corporation was taken as the basis of this survey. The paper produces the findings on different important differentials of the child labor, such as- causes of child labor, causes of rural-urban migration, hours of work and provisions for leave, income expenditure and savings, educational background and some other important related topics.

    Determinants of managerial ownership and the link between ownership and performance; development of testable hypothesis

    Managerial ownership and firm performance are endogenously determined by exogenous (and only partly observed) changes in the firm’s contracting environment. To develop the testable hypothesis the extension of the cross-sectional results runed by Demesetz and Lehn (1985) (Journal of Political Economy, 93, 1155-1177) has been used and the panel data been used to show that managerial ownership is explained by key variables in the contracting environment in a way consistent with the predictions of principal-agent models. A large fraction of the cross-sectional variation in managerial ownership is explained by unobserved firm heterogeneity. Moreover, after controlling both for observed firm characteristics and firm fixed effects; it cannot be concluded (econometrically) that changes in managerial ownership agent firm performance.

    Derivations of generalized inverse using contour integration and interpolation polynomiyal

    This paper deals with a representation of Generalized inverse (g-inverse) by the contour integral formula that supports the four major properties of g-inverse. Here we have used Cauchy’s integral formula. These are verified numerically. This paper also includes the derivation of g-inverse by using minimal polynomial. Here we express A + as a Lagrange-Sylvester interpolation polynomial in powers of A,A*. Mathematica codes are used in these examples.

    Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC): organizational innovation in population, health and development in Bangladesh in the context of the millennium development goals

    Bangladesh has marked strides to make in reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)for child mortality and maternal health by 2015. Progress and achievements that have been made to date are recognized. However, challenges remain that may impede steady progress towards the realization of the goals, including social inequality, largely defined by the low status of women, and the rich-poor divide. BRAC’s innovative organizational approach in Bangladesh serves to fill in the gaps left by the public sector, and brings a comprehensive approach to addressing these challenges and encouraging advances in health and development.

    A new technique of PWM boost inverter for solar home application

    This paper analyzes the procedural approach and benefits of applying optimization techniques to the design of a boost dc-ac converter with solar cell as an input. The analysis is performed based on the particular 12V DC to 220 V AC conversion for home applications. A traditional design methodology is the use of buck inverter. One of the characteristics of the most classical inverter is that it produces an AC output instantaneous voltage always lower than the DC input voltage. Thus, if an output voltage higher than the input one is needed, a boost dc-dc converter must be used between the DC source and the inverter. This paper describes a new P.W.M. strategy for a voltage source inverter. This modulation strategy reduces the energy losses and harmonics in the P.W.M. voltage source inverter. This technique allows the P.W.M. voltage source inverter to become a new feasible solution for solar home application.
