Idrish; Johnsson, AndersRhythmic up - down movements of the lateral leaflets in the plant Desmodium gyrans (L.F.) DC. have been studied. Leaflet movements were recorded with a video-computer system, where the digital video signals from the CCD camera were processed in an ATARI 1040 ST computer using special software. The average period of the lateral leaflet movements at 240C was estimated to be 3.5 min. It is proposed, however, that the rhythmic movements of the lateral leaflets might be due to the movement of water across the motor cells, i.e. shrinking and expansion of motor cells, andproton pumps, membrane potential changes and ion transports are responsible for water uptake and loss in motor cells. Leaflet movements in the presence of light stimuli were then studied. It was found that the leaflet always moved towards the direction of the light, whether it was applied from the abaxial or from the adaxial part of the pulvinus. A strong effect was found in both instances, namely the reduced amplitude of the leaflet movement and thus a shortened period. When the abaxial part was exposed to light, the leaflet oscillated in a lower position, but when the adaxial part was illuminated, it oscillated in an upper Detailed instructions for typing your article are given in the following. An explicit analysis of the bifurcation for 2-dimensional parameter space is done and the structure of the non-trivial solution branches of the bifurcation equation near origin is given. Since the study of the bifurcation problem is closely related to change in the qualitative behaviour of the systems, and to exchange of stability, analysis of the stability of the bifurcating solutions is done here. It is proved that the stability of the bifurcating solutions is de-termined, to the lowest non-vanishing order, by the eigenvalues of the Fréchet derivative of the re-duced bifurcation equation.listelement.badge.dso-type Item , Nonparametric bootstrapping for multiple logistic regression model using R(BRAC University, 2004) Hossain, Ahmed; Khan, H.T. AbdullahThe use of explanatory variables or covariates in a regression model is an important way to represent heterogeneity in a population. Again bootstrapping is rapidly becoming a popular tool to apply in a broad range of standard applications including multiple regression. The nonparametric bootstrap allows us to estimate the sampling distribution of a statistic empirically without making assumptions about the form of the population, and without deriving the sampling distribution explicitly. The main objective of this study to discuss the nonparametric bootstrapping procedure for multiple logistic regression model associated with Davidson and Hinkley's (1997) “boot” library in R.listelement.badge.dso-type Item , Mathmatical formulations of the basic diffusion equation: a discussion(BRAC University, 2004) Islam, M.A.; Buschatz, H.A discussion is made on the possible forms of mathematical formulations for the basic diffusion equation. The formulations have been derived from the law of motion. It is shown that the assumption of Stokes resistance leads to paradoxical conclusions in some specific cases of diffusion processes. It is argued that the expression for resistant forces in transport processes is empirical, and hence the form of the diffusion equation depends on the expression chosen in describing the resistant forces. Evidences are collected from literature in favor of both thermodynamic and Fickian formulation of the diffusion equation. It is concluded that ideal form of diffusion equation is absent, and the choice of the form of diffusion equation would depend on the specific circumstances being studied.listelement.badge.dso-type Item , E-commerce and wealth management service(BRAC University, 2004) Quader, Mohammed Shahedul; Siddique, M. Abu Bakar; Ahmed, EzazThe aim of this paper is to identify wealth management services and the impact that e-commerce has had upon its range and delivery. The study reveals that e-commerce undoubtedly provides technological opportunities to expand services and introduce new and sometimes innovative tools and functions to enhance client relationships. However, it is found not to be a panacea, with improved client and relationship manager supplied information more critical to success. It also considers the impact of e-commerce on CRM where attempts at segmentation have met with mixed results and client needs are still to be effectively served as a whole.listelement.badge.dso-type Item , Organizational citizenship behavior: Its nature and antecedents(BRAC University, 2004) Jahangir, Nadim; Akbar, Mohammad Muzahid; Haq, MahmudulTheory and research on Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCB) has presumed OCB as a set of desirable behaviors that contributes to the organizational effectiveness. So far OCB has been connoted as one of the antecedents of organizational performance. However, the antecedents of OCB are not thoroughly investigated. This study explores various existing definitions of OCB and then examines the dimensions of OCB. Based on the discussion on the dimensions of OCB, a number of antecedents were identified. When the antecedents are known, managers would be able to promote OCB among their employees for better performance.listelement.badge.dso-type Item , Global technological change impact on female textile and garment workers in Thailand(BRAC University, 2004) Islam, Nazrul; Swierczek, Fredric WilliamGlobal technological change has significant impact on lower skilled female textile and garment workers in Thailand, as it brings new machines and manufacturing processes into the company. This study aims at identifying the factors of global technological change on female textile and garment workers in Thailand. It covers three impact areas such as, job security, job satisfaction and work relations. 10 variables were identified from job security, 36 from job satisfaction and 10 from work relations’ areas. Multivariate analysis such as, Factor Analysis and Multiple Regression was used to analyze the data. Factor Analysis has been performed to identify the factors of the technological change on the female workers. Using Multiple Regression analysis, the overall impact of the technological change on female textile and garment workers has been assessed. The results show that the impact factors are frustration, skill demands, downsizing, meaningful work, pride in job, supervision, benefits, bureaucracy, unclear work assignments, recognition, fairness in pay, workload, the change process, strikes, and personal control. Among these factors, frustration and downsizing are concerned with job security; benefits, bureaucracy are related to job satisfaction; and the work processes and personal control are concerned with work relations. These factors are significantly related to the overall impact of the technological change on Thai female textile and garment workers. Factors concerning job security, job satisfaction, work relations together are significantly related to the overall socioeconomic lives of female and garment workers in Thailand.listelement.badge.dso-type Item , Effects of different animal manures on yield quality and nutrient uptake by Mustard CV. Agrani(BRAC University, 2004) Zamil, Sheikh Shawkat; Quadir Forhad Quazi, Chowdhury Dr. M.A.H.; Al Wahid, AdnanA pot experiment was carried out at the researcher’s net house of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from November 2003 to February 2004 to find out the effects of different animal manure on yield, quality and nutrient uptake by mustard cv. Agrani. The experiment comprised of two levels of cage system poultry manure, deep litter system poultry manure, cow dung and bio-gas slurry viz. 10 and 20 ton ha-1, one control and one chemical fertilizer @ recommended dose. Cage system poultry manure @ 20 ton ha-1 significantly increased the seed and straw yield of mustard and cow dung showed lower performance. In straw and seed the highest uptake of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S was obtained from cage system poultry manure @ 20 ton ha-1. Protein and oil content was also found higher in this treatment. Seed yield was found to be significantly and positively correlated with branch and effective pod per plant. Protein and oil contents of mustard seeds were increased with increasing level of animal manures though their effects were not significant. A positive and significant correlation was observed between protein and oil contents of mustard cv. Agrani. The overall results suggest that cage system poultry manure @ 20 ton ha-1 gave best performance among the parameters studied.listelement.badge.dso-type Item , Exploring the household compositions of female sex-workers in brothels: Daulatdia, a case study(BRAC University, 2004) Karim, ShuchiThe paper looks into the household composition of female sex-workers in Daulatdia Brothel, Bangladesh to understand the concept of ‘power’ within these households. Based on a limited number semi-structured interviews of sex-workers, the attempt is to trace power through the three stages of sex-workers professional life: apprentice, tenant, and house-owner, and to examine how class and gender plays roles in this brothel power structure. The research questions conventional ‘victimhood’ of sex-workers in broader Bangladeshi context, and attempts to seek for ‘power’, assuming that within the oppressive patriarchal brothel framework, they exercise power and agency at the level of household in terms of economic independence, motherhood, social mobility, household organization and the struggle for respectability. It is a revised and shortened version of the author’s dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Masters of Arts Degree in Gender and International Development at the University of Warwick, UK in 2002.listelement.badge.dso-type Item , Discourse of gender: conflicting ideologies vs. social policies(BRAC University, 2004) Haque, Muhammed Shahriar; Chandran, Sanda Kumari D/OIt is undeniable the influence that ‘ideology’ has in shaping our thoughts and how we perceive the world at large, as is undeniable the significant role it plays in maintaining the balance of power in a society. It may seem ironic how a society tries to maintain this balance of power by empowering women with equal opportunities, and at the same time—unconsciously and sometimes consciously—suppresses them by taking for granted that the norms of equality will be respected and practiced by everyone. In Malaysia, the ideologies in some school textbooks seem to imply that women are appropriate for certain jobs which are recessive in nature while men for jobs that are more active in nature. In the employment sector, the government is trying to promote women by giving them opportunities to engage themselves in all types of professions. However, some employees in the private sector do not seem to practice the government polices regarding equal opportunities and tend to reflect the ideologies of the textbooks: they tend to segregate certain jobs according to gender. This paper intends to compare the findings of two studies and elucidate how certain ideologies and policies are conflicting in nature and how they inhibit women from choosing career-advancing choices.listelement.badge.dso-type Item , Lethal love and haunted houses: the maternal problematic in Toni Morrison(BRAC University, 2004) Radha, Chakravartylistelement.badge.dso-type Item , Indictment of misogyny on mary wollstonecraft and Rokeya Sakhawat Hussain(BRAC University, 2004) Hasan, Md. MahmudulWollstonecraft’s supreme honour of being the mother of western feminism has been questioned by an indictment of misogyny by Susan Gubar; a similar charge of misogyny could potentially be made against the proto-feminist standing of Rokeya if her polemical works are eyed through Gubar’s lens. Taylor, in her article Misogyny and Feminism: The Case of Mary Wollstonecraft, comes to Wollstonecraft’s rescue while the author of this article intends to apply an antidote before such an indictment is registered against Rokeya. The misreading of Wollstonecraft’s The Rights of Woman is prompted by her criticisms of women for their excessive attention to vocations that render them more subservient to men’s desires and an easy prey to their inhibiting measures. What differentiates Wollstonecraft as well as Rokeya from Gubar’s paradigmatic feminists is their atypical approach to righting the wrongs done to women. Their feminist campaign does not end with making some disparaging remarks against men; rather, they want to sanitise women from the frivolities that they have internalised and that have appeared as their characteristic traits. They pit their atypical approach against a long masculinist tradition of mesmerising women by applauding their weaknesses. They take an unconventional tactic and criticise the feminine attributes that men find pleasing in women. Both Wollstonecraft and Rokeya argue that the apparent frivolities that seem inherent components of women’s selves are actually social constructions. Although it may seem that Wollstonecraft and Rokeya castigate women, the underhand criticism is actually aimed against men who systematically deny women their right to engage in worthier activities. Both Wollstonecraft and Rokeya call upon women to assume full responsibility as human beings and to end their abject dependence on men, which they think is the way to bring about a revolution in the masculine perception of women. The similarity in tone and in the coinage of their diction points towards the universal sisterhood that modern postcolonial feminists champion. Both Wollstonecraft and Rokeya perceive a systematic masculinist manoeuvring in keeping women fascinated with frivolous activities. Their agendas include disaffecting women from such vocations. Beer’s concept of the presentism of past may counteract misreading of early feminist texts as they evolved in the cases of Wollstonecraft and Rokeya.
