On the triangular relationship between political corruption, gender inequality, and socio-economic development in Bangladesh

The book contains articles from a variety of disciplines held together by a common thread: socio-economic development of Bangladesh. The articles are grouped together by their disciples such as political science, social science, science and technology and economics. The contributing authors engage in systematic discussions on country's political and constitutional issues, causes of poverty and underdevelopment, corruptions and governance. A number of articles deal with the status and prospects of fisheries, water resources, informal and higher education, and steel and engineering technology, while others focus on monetary and banking policies, privatization and effects and implications of globalization. The book contains data, analysis and policy directions on current issues affecting Bangladesh�s politics, industry, education, economy and so on. Whereas the book is not intended to provide a fully coordinated set of policy prescriptions on current issues, the articles in the book do point to a common set of problems facing Bangladesh such as the domination of rent-seeking class and associated corruption, political instability and violence, lack of well-coordinated economic policies for industrialization, parasitic education system, etc. The solutions suggested in the articles are based on in-depth, objective and comparative analysis of the subject matter and should prove useful to the policy makers and development practitioners. - See more at: http://www.bdiusa.org/book/development-issues-bangladesh-ii#sthash.0VQd5bWB.dpuf

Development Issues of Bangladesh-III has been written with the theme: human development and quality of life in Bangladesh. The two concepts, central to the evolution of a civilized society, are approached from a variety of perspectives that include key global indexes and their role in Bangladesh, various economic, social, and human aspects of development, governance and identity issues, class factions and the potential for democratization, empowerment and rights, especially of women, the role of a gender development index to account for women and their contributions, rural financial markets, health care, fertility, literacy and education and the potential for e-learning, environmental issues, as well as political economy and finance. The sixteen articles in this volume provide a critical examination of the above issues and a rigorous analysis of empirical data that relate to human development and quality of life. This volume also attempts to provide policy prescriptions for problems centering on the main theme. The timely subject matter, objective analysis, and policy prescriptions are expected to prove useful to academicians, development practitioners and policy makers in Bangladesh, as well as in other developing countries. Bangladesh Development Initiative (BDI), the sponsoring organization of this book, is a US-based think-tank of scholars and professionals devoted to the generation and dissemination of knowledge on development issues of Bangladesh. BDI's efforts are focused on reaching policy-makers, academicians, politicians, diplomats, businessmen, students, and the wider constituency. Consistent with this objective, BDI has already published two volumes: Development Issues of Bangladesh in November 1996 and Development Issues of Bangladesh-II in April 2003. The University Press Limited in Bangladesh has published both volumes.

"This set of three volumes is not just a compilation of essays in honour of Professor Ashok Kumar Dutt, it personifies his life as a person and a professional. Prof. Dutt has established his international credentials as the leading exponent of urban and regional planning and has enriched both its theory and practice by his brilliant ideas and practical insights. His contributions in the areas of urban, social, cultural, medical, population, economic and development geography as well as in urban and regional development planning in India and abroad are very extensive and praiseworthy. These volumes reflect the spirit of Prof. Dutt's work and philosophy. Volume one, containing thirty-two papers, provides an understanding of urban structure and problems ranging from national to the local level. Explaining the patterns and processes of urban network and systems in China, India and Korea, it discusses at length the evolution and characteristics of regional urbanization in Africa, India and Ohio. It also extends discussion on the characteristic features and infrastructural problems of different city sizes. Volume two, having twenty-eight papers, deals with social and cultural aspects drawn from experiences of many countries. It provides glimpse of innovative ideas in the field of gender and migration, castes and political system, folk cultural and sacred landscapes, dissemination of language and linguistic regionalism, diet and disease, and health ecology and healthcare systems. Volume Three, consisting of twenty-eight papers, examines the different aspects of regional planning. Emerging issues like global warming and climate change, balanced regional development, new economic geography, community-based conservation, role of trans-national corporations, environmental sustainability and sustainable agriculture, joint forest management, integrated watershed and common land management are analyzed and documented. An introduction on the theory and methods of regional planning based on cross-cultural experiences, policy practices and sector-specific issues across the global to local scale has also been provided.
