(Journal of Applied Business Research (JABR), 2010-08) Ullah, G. M. Shafayet; Islam, Nazrul
Fast food industry is a high growing sector of Bangladesh. It is concerned with the tastes and habits of the people. The food-taking habit especially in fast food segment has been changing very fast over last decade among the people of Dhaka - the capital city of Bangladesh. The reasons could be attributed by the increase of awareness, growth of education, development of information technology, and expansion of television channels and print media in Bangladesh. Hence, this paper aims at identifying the preference factors of fast food consumers living in Dhaka city. This study was conducted among the university students who usually eat fast food at their leisure time. To conduct the study, a total of 250 respondents were interviewed with a structured questionnaire. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used in analyzing the data. Multivariate analysis technique like factor analysis was performed to identify the preference factors of the fast food student-consumers of Bangladesh. Multiple regressions were run to identify the relationship between the factors identified and the overall preference of the consumers. Results show that the consumers give most importance on brand reputation of the food item followed by nearness to receive and accessibility, similarity of taste with previous experience, cost and quality of the food, discount and taste, cleanliness and hygiene, salesmanship and decoration, fat and cholesterol level, and self-service factors. This study suggests that the brand reputation, nearness and accessibility, similarity in taste, and cost and quality relationship should be emphasized to improve the attraction of the university students towards the fast food items in Bangladesh.

Factors influencing consumer service experience in private hospitals: a study from Bangladeshi perspective
(© 2011 Interdisciplinary Journal of Contemporary Research in Business (IJCRB), 2011-09) Ullah, G. M. Shafayet; Islam, Md. Rifayat
Private hospitals and clinics are privately managed organizations in which sick and injured persons are given medical or surgical treatments. A clinic usually provides treatments to non-resident patients, while a hospital provides the same for both resident & non-resident patients. Traditionally, healthcare has been an important activity of the government of Bangladesh since the British period and the trend continued after Bangladesh gained independence in 1971. During the early 1990’s, Bangladesh firmly committed itself to free market economy. As a result, the healthcare sector slowly began to attract greater attention of the private sector. Large segments of the population in developing countries are deprived of fundamental rights and one of which is access to basic health care. Bangladesh is no exception in this case. This study found out the factors that influence the service experience in private hospitals. Specific hypotheses were developed, information from the consumers of private hospitals was collected through structured questionnaire, data was analyzed through statistical tools and finally conclusions were drawn about the factors that influence the service experience in private hospitals. These findings will be helpful in understanding various aspects of consumers view point about the privatized health sector of Bangladesh which can be further improved.

Factors influencing the Bangladeshi consumers’ purchase decision regarding fast moving consumer goods: an exploratory study
(© 2012 The IUP Journal of Brand Management, 2012-10-01) Ullah, G. M. Shafayet; Prince, Panuel Rozario
Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector is one of the largest sectors in the economy of Bangladesh. In the last few years, the FMCG industry in Bangladesh has experienced a dramatic growth; both qualitative and quantitative improvements have taken place in the consumer durables segment. FMCG in marketing means convenient and low involvement products like, salt, flours, pens, chocolates, etc. In recent years, the FMCG industry worldwide has experienced a difficult market condition. In some categories, formerly popular brands have either been deleted or squeezed between the category leaders and low-cost competitors. The study has identified eight primary factors that influence consumers’ purchase decision of FMCG products in Bangladesh. These factors are sales promotion, unavailability of brand, time constraint, in-store TVC, variety-seeking behavior, product features, end of aisle display and product convenience. This study recommends focusing on three important factors, i.e., sales promotion, time constraints and unavailability of brand to smoothen the progress of the FMCG industry in Bangladesh. The FMCG industry will find better development opportunities, if the findings of this study are used as an input in its strategic decision making.
