Challenges of Dairy farms in Bangladesh: a study of selected small scale dairy farms at Birulia Union of Savar Upazila.

The present study attempts to identify the challenges of dairy farm by analyzing the
different cost structures and returns in milk production of dairy enterprises in Birulia
Union of Savar Upazila.The focus of the study is to quantify the cost and returns and to
explore the relationship of factor affecting yield cost and net return. The study tries to
identify some crucial factor regarding milk production such as scarcity of feed and
fodder, improved breed, veterinary services and care, institutional credit facilities. Dairy
farmers of study area spend 79.18% of total cost for feed and 63.08% only for
concentrate item of feeds. In case of return farmers mostly depends on milk sell,
73.49% of total return comes from milk and 25.65% from cattle sale. As the area has
scarcity of roughages, farmers mostly depend on concentrate item of feed which is
costlier. Eighty percent (80%) of the farmer are not well trained in modern farm
management and 20% are trained in dairy. The key problems faced by the dairy farmers
of study area are lack of modernization and use of modern technologies (80%), high
feed price and lack of high yielding fodder (70%), diseases like infertility (40%) and
mastitis (30%) and lack of high yielding breed (30%).
