An expanding corpus of research confirms that a number of genetic and immunological variables contribute to premature delivery and low birth weight. Vitamin D can have substantial impact on pregnancy and birth outcomes by influencing calcium balance, immunity, and cell proliferation. Its deficiency in pregnant women can lead to adverse results. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) is crucial to the endocrine system, regulating gene expression alongside encoding the VDR protein. This review explored the impact of the maternal vitamin D receptor gene's single nucleotide polymorphism, BsmI on VDR activity and their associations with preterm delivery and birth weight.
