Abstract
Osteoporosis is a debilitating condition affecting over 200 million individuals worldwide, characterized by reduced bone mass and increased susceptibility to fractures. In Bangladesh, the prevalence is alarmingly high, particularly among women and the elderly, yet it remains underdiagnosed and poorly understood. This review synthesizes data from global and regional studies, highlighting the critical role of lifestyle, nutrition, and awareness in influencing osteoporosis outcomes. Analysis reveals that approximately 35% of Bangladeshi adults suffer from osteoporosis, with an additional 40% classified as having osteopenia Factors such as low calcium intake, insufficient vitamin D levels, and sedentary lifestyles are prevalent, affecting over 70% of the population Notably, only 30% of individuals are aware of osteoporosis and its prevention, underscoring the urgent need for targeted public health interventions. This paper emphasizes the importance of comprehensive strategies integrating nutrition education, community outreach, and accessible screening programs. By addressing these factors, Bangladesh can mitigate the growing burden of osteoporosis and improve the quality of life for its population. This review provides a foundation for developing evidence-based policies and interventions tailored to the country’s unique socio-cultural context.
