Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the perceptions of English language teachers regarding curriculum changes in Bangladesh. The popularity of the English language has changed much since 1971, when Bangladesh got its freedom. During the last forty years, different governments in Bangladesh have started different English language programs. In 2023, a new program called assessment-based learning was put in place to try to change the way schools work again. The 2023 curriculum brought many changes to the education system of Bangladesh, such as reducing the memorization system, no more traditional examination system, a new marking system, teaching students real-world education rather than being bounded by textbooks, and so on. This study aimed to bring out the challenges faced by teachers and students, their reaction to the 2023 curriculum along with their suggestions to improve the curriculum, and also their perspective about going back to the old curriculum by collecting data from both teachers and students using a semi-structured interview of a qualitative method. Regarding the 2023 curriculum and the issues they encountered, teachers and students expressed both positive and negative opinions, such as a lack of resources and training and issues in large classrooms, elimination of the traditional exam system, and they also expressed their opinion regarding reduction of the memorization method. Additionally, this study presents suggestions for improving the curriculum and teachers' attitudes toward returning to the previous curriculum. It can help the government and schools make better plans for teaching and training.
