Abstract
Sustainable procurement has evolved from "green" and ''social" procurement to an integrated approach balancing environmental, social, and economic interests. This research examines the challenges of implementing sustainable procurement in Bangladesh, a developing nation pursuing economic growth and equity. Despite rising expectations for sustainable products and practices, developing a cohesive sustainability strategy remains difficult. Supply chain oversight and risk mitigation pose challenges in validating environmental claims and tracking social outcomes, although emerging legislation addresses issues like modern slavery. Global efforts promote integrating international standards into procurement, but fully incorporating sustainability components persists as an obstacle. Complex supply networks and consumption patterns also create hurdles. Sustainable public procurement in Bangladesh demands comprehensive integration of social, economic and environmental considerations. Leveraging purchasing power, incentivizing human rights standards, and establishing training frameworks become essential. Aligning supply chain strategies with citizens' needs is paramount, fostering a society valuing human dignity, social progress, and a rights-based future.
