Being a minority population in American society, African-Americans encounter various social and political conflicts and discriminations in their lives. The enforcement of the values and norms of the dominant white culture has made it impossible for them to hold on to a distinctive way of life. African-American history is a record of the struggle of this community for the right to exist and a recognition of their place in American society. The struggle has been long and hard and taken on various forms. This past or history has a great impact on Afro-American lives, and marks their fight for recognition and social and political progress. Resisting dominant opposing forces has been an integral part of this struggle. Therefore, this paper attempts to present the way African-American have resisted. Having said this, the paper attempts to explore those paradigms of the African American struggle that seek to create their own space, particularly focusing on women to highlight what they went through. It is in this context I will be looking at Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved, The Bluest Eye and Sula.en_US
