one of the most important functions in the production Process of housing is the design of houses. The degree of success of the design depends on how well the house responds to users needs and its performance as a modifier of the external environment. Given the wide variety of problems facing urban housing in Bangladesh, the extent to which built up housing successfully meets user and environmental needs is a major area of concern. .There is a growing tendency to adapt western ideas as models for urban housing. Although they are insensitive to local needs they are accepted because there exists no alternatives. This dissertation attempts to study the influence of local factors on urban housing design through a systematic analysis of traditional housing
and examples of existing urban housing' This in combination with the design determinants for urban housing forms the basis for a local approach to urban housing design. The approach is outlined in the final chapter recommendations for the design of houses in urban in the form of a set of areas.
