This research aims to find out the ways the adolescent students of SEMC became motivated to
learn English. The data is collected by taking semi-structured interviews of 12 adolescent
students of that institution. Moreover, the interview of one of the teachers as well as the notes of
class observations are used as data for this research. From the interview of the students, it was
found that students were both instrumentally and interactively motivated to learn English but the
intensity of their integrative motivation was stronger. Besides, most of the students were
motivated by their family members, friends, society and teachers, although some motivated
themselves to learn English. Additionally, from the class observations, it was found that the
teacher made the classes engaging but did not consider whether the students enjoyed the way he
taught or not.
