In Bangladesh English is taught and learned as a second language. " English for Today " is the first source of academic learning English. Bengali medium students are very much familiar with this textbook from their primary level of education up to higher secondary level. Though the students are familiar with the textbook they fail to develop their four skills properly. It is because of some flaws in the textbook and the educational system in our country. The objective of this study is to assess the reading materials (reading passages and reading tasks) of the textbook English for today of Class 9 and 10. It attempts to analyze the reading materials and tries to find out the flaws and strengths of the materials. The research also seeks to assess the effectiveness of the reading materials by analyzing the perspectives of the teachers through questionnaire survey.
