Birchandra Gano pathagar and Nagar milonayoton, which is also known as Cumilla
townhall. Established in 1885, this 135-year-old building stands with pride witnessing
hundred years of the cultural and political history of cumilla. Rather than preserving this
historic landmark, a new proposal has been made to demolish the old townhall building
and replace it with a new one. Over time many changes and alterations have occurred
in the site of townhall and townhall building itself. However, considering the historic and
cultural value of the site and context the townhall building should be appraised for
conservation, preservation, or adaptive reuse. This paper extensively discusses the
importance of the old townhall building named “Birchandra Gano pathagar and Nagar
milonayoton" and the approach chosen for the new townhall building along with proper
justification through analysis. The design strives to meet its requirements along with,
replacing functions of Cumilla club, mosques, shops, and shaheed minar keeping in
mind the necessity of people. This project also aims to create a new city center for
Cumilla which will be a hub of public interaction at many levels and functions.
