Center for Khadi Development and Expansion
Abstract
Khadi is one of the oldest heritage crafts of Bangladesh. The fabric has stood the test of time
simply because of its versatility, simplicity and climate-responsive nature. Unfortunately, the
existence of this craft has become increasingly endangered by the emergence of cheaper, yet
lower quality industrially-produced fabrics. While the new fabric are more popular, Khadi is
richer, more context-appropriate and more ecofriendly. This paper endeavors to explore the
possible courses of action that can be taken to revive a fading Bangladeshi craft- the craft of
Khadi. This paper also tries to explore if design intervention and strategic institutionalization
can help in the intricate process of craft revival, development and expansion
