Medicinal plants are great source of biologically active phytochemicals with therapeutic
characteristics that have been recognized over time.In traditional medicine, many components
of mangrove plants are used for their curative and defensive properties. This study aimed to
review pharmacological properties of Bruguiera gymnorhiza and also its related
phytochemicals. It is a significant medicinal plant, grows in mangrove areas, has so many
economical values. In various research preparations, its extractions have shown a great
impact on phytochemical and pharmacological activities. The most valuable phytochemicals
are flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, phenolic compounds, phytosterols, and
terpenoids obtained from the plant’s parts are discussed in this article. These bioactive
phytoconstituents formed in plant tissues are mainly responsible for plants' different
pharmacological effects. It has shown highly antidiarrheal, analgesic, antimicrobial,
hepatoprotective, antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic, antioxidant, etc activities due to
these compounds that are explained in this paper and could be useful in the development of
future pharmaceutical products.
