Extraction of peptides and proteins from senna tora seeds and determination of its antimicrobial activity
Abstract
Senna tora (L.) Roxb is a plant of Liguminosae family and this family is known to be rich in protein content. The objective of this study is to extract and quantify the amount of peptides and proteins present in Senna tora seeds as well as to analyze its antimicrobial efficacy and these experiments has been done for the first time on Senna tora seeds. To extract the peptides and proteins a cold extraction buffer was used and their presence was determined by SDS-page and its concentration was quantified by Lowry method. Antimicrobial efficacy of the extracted peptides & proteins and methanolic crude extract of the seeds were examined against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. No antimicrobial activity was found for peptides and proteins but the methanolic crude extract formed clear zone against E.coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
